Picture of a USGS Retiree volunteering
  • Many retirees remain interested in participating in the ongoing USGS mission and its science. Some retirees work as rehired annuitants, some continue as Emeriti in their area of expertise and leadership, some mentor younger USGS personnel, and some volunteer their time on entirely new interests and pursuits within the USGS or other agencies. Our organization works with the USGS volunteer and emeritus programs to highlight opportunities that might interest retirees.

The best way to volunteer with the USGS is to contact your former science center leadership. If you wish to volunteer with a discipline or science center other than your former center, contact the regional headquarters office containing the discipline/science center/project that interests you. Here are some websites that may help you identify a volunteer/emeritus opportunity.

  • USGS Experienced Service Program

Volunteer opportunities across participating Federal agencies by state and position.

  • Volunteer.gov - Learn about opportunities for volunteering with government agencies.

  • We also work with current USGS leadership to understand and report on the activities of the USGS and its programs.

  • The National Water Science Workshop planning committee invites you to two virtual plenary sessions featuring keynote speakers, scientist spotlights, and merit award ceremonies.
